On Prejudice Essay Example for Free
On Prejudice Essay The word bigot is a powerful word. It is a word that many feel to be of the utmost offense, and yet, by definition, it is a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices. With this in mind, and human natures impeccable ability to draw stereotypes for every type of person, cant we all be considered bigots? In Bill Cosbys short satire, On Prejudice, this issue is concisely addressed and brought to its knees through his use of sarcasm, and an ability to corner any stereotype by just simply bringing it to a clear, succinct truth. While many balked at the idea of racial prejudice and stereotypes during the 1970s, Cosby approached it with honesty and candor. His use of vulgar words, diffident body language, belittling tone, and biting disparagement allowed Cosby to effectively show societys lack of understanding and appreciation for the worlds racial diversity. In a time when prejudice was beginning to cower in the shadows as a product of the civil rights movement, Cosby recognized that while law had forbid discrimination, it still very much existed in our culture and society. On Prejudice was his way of addressing this delicate issue. The 1970s followed a decade of success among the civil rights movement; however, this success caused many to withdraw from still recognizing it as a problem. While discrimination was pronounced unlawful, Cosby addressed a different kind of prejudice; A prejudice that was subconscious and mendacious. On Prejudice opens with a wide shot of Cosby sitting on a stool beneath a single spotlight. The music is a single violin, playing a single chord. Cosby is smoking a cigar and slouched over the stool. The use of lighting and music is very effective in that it truly adds to the solitude of Cosbys ridicule. It is a keen way that he uses to single out prejudice, and it is very effective in that it gives a sense that bigotry is a lonely place to be. His body language and subtle movements give the audience a sense of distance and that the person they are watching is very closed off. Cosby then begins to speak. At first notice he employs a feeling of simple impersonation and innocent humor. However, after listening, one begins to realize that his impersonation goes much deeper. Secondary thoughts begin to surface and innocent humor turns into harsh ridicule and mockery. He speaks on old people, children, Jews, Irish, African Americans (which he refers to as niggers), and Italians. Each group is addressed as the scum of the earth. He takes stereotypes and prejudices and gives them a voice. His phrases and word usage have a bold honesty to them. He consistently speaks of making groups just go away. But he abstains from his harsh comments by repeating that they would not have to leave by blood shed. This effectively adds to the arrogance of his character and truly reveals the power of satire. Another action he consistently refers to is spitting on certain groups. He sets up why he dislikes each group. Then, whether it is the drunken Irish, Italian criminals, or slow old people, he then follows with stating that if he were to see these groups he would just spit on them. This is reintroduced over and over again to remind the audience that they are dealing with an obnoxious person. This technique also reinforces the arrogance of his character in that it shows that he lacks the will to come up with intelligent solutions or justification for his actions. With these in mind, Cosbys most effective technique is his ability to grab the audiences attention through satirical disdain. Cosby makes it incredibly easy to fall into a trap where one can be lured into relating to his judgments and stereotypes. He makes his audience laugh and connect with his opinions. But just when the audience begins to feel comfortable, Cosby reveals that he is a bigot. This sense of comfort and correlation quickly turns to scorn. He reveals how shameful it is to stereotype. All while staying in character and reinforcing the arrogance of society. He makes his audience feel as if they were no better than the man whose solution is to just get rid of ? em. He makes his audience feel that they are no better than a man whos so hateful that he would spit on other people. It is an ultimate sense of embarrassment. Putting these techniques to use gives one a sense of truth and yet shame at the same time. By addressing the most common forms of stereotypes and racial discrimination, He allows his audience to stop and not only reflect on how wrong it is to racially profile, but to also allow his audience to consider the judgments they themselves may have passed on certain groups prior. Cosbys impersonation ultimately embodies that of social unjust as a whole. Because of his honest and impudent characterization, he allows for no gray areas of discussion. His parody of a bigot properly makes each and every person feel like a bigot.

Introduction of conflict Conflict is an inevitable part of interpersonal relationship. It is how to approach and management, can be constructive or destructive conflict. Conflict think the important thing, when people who hold different views. We live in the community and the family could not see, because we do things. Daily conflict, sometimes small disputes, sometimes violent battle. Each of us according to our own unique personality and cultural background of the conflict. People have different motives, beliefs, values à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬ ¹Ã ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬ ¹and goals. Two people can perceive and explain the same situation is very different. When rescue workers to respond to major emergencies, we have found work elsewhere. They may be from another village or city in our own country or from another continent. Two people may speak the same language, but a controversial, you may find other response is the same. The other way to deal with conflict may confuse or offend us. Our day-to-day work, the problems and contradictions is natural, the key is to find the right way to overcome these difficulties continue to productive work. A tool to overcome their own views and prejudices, so we can see the other persons point of view. In order to resolve the conflict, we must know their roles, and how we see others. The most common forms of conflict resolution, negotiation, mediation, community meetings, conflict transformation and peer mediation. Which way is best, depending on the nature of the conflict and the parties. Experts in conflict resolution to provide a reasonable proposal Summary how peaceful settlement of disputes, the two sides find acceptable. Each conflict is different, people will react in their own way. But with the desire to solve the problem and a deep understanding of the parties and dispute the root cause, you will usually be able to resolve conflicts before they become violent. Sources of primary conflict There are many reasons or reasons of the conflict in any work environment. Some of the main reasons are: Poor communication: different communication style may lead to misunderstandings between employees or between employees and management personnel. The lack of communication, promote conflict underground. Different values: any workplace by individuals who see a different world. Conflict, there is a lack of acceptance and understanding of these differences. Different interests conflict, their personal goals, and ignore the organizational objectives and organize workers personal fight well-being. Scarce resources: In many cases, the employees feel that they have the competition available resources to do their work. Environment of scarce resources, which will lead to conflict despite awareness of scarce resources. Personality clashes: All the work environment by different personalities. Colleagues to understand and accept each others work and the way to solve the problem, a conflict will occur. Poor performance: When one or more individuals in the work of the unit does not perform potential this is not a solution does not work, conflict is inevitable. The natural pressure of the workplace environment, as well as the conflict between colleagues either personal reasons, this pressure to enable them to establish and develop the work environment will only further weaken next. In many cases, the conflict in the workplace seems to be the fact that in life. We see that different people have different goals and needs, has entered the conflict. We have all seen, may lead to the often intense personal hatred. Understanding of this issue, and to take positive action, they can help solve this problem, a place where they really want, while creating a comfortable working area, so that their organization. In addition, it was agreed that these major sources, the party can solve a lot of problems, and it brings to the surface as well as to obtain benefits, and they may not be the first to think of. Specifically, through the understanding and agreement of the source to resolve conflicts, team members can develop stronger mutual respect, and a new b elief in their work together. A team in a big advantage is its diversity of resources, knowledge and ideas. However, the diversity of the conflict. With the growing number of corporate restructuring work teams need training in conflict resolution will continue to grow. Team conflict is not necessarily destructive. The conflict may lead to new ideas and methods, organizational processes, and to deal with the problem of interest. The conflict, in this sense, can be considered positive, because it is conducive to the surfacing of the important issues, and to provide opportunities for people to develop their communication and interpersonal skills. Workplace by individuals who have their own point of view to see the world. Some employees have a strong belief, they are not willing to compromise. These beliefs can conflict with colleagues, resulting in conflict. For example, if a person is strongly opposed to diversity in the workplace, may be difficult to accept his other workers. In order to avoid conflict with these workers, he must try to accept or initiate more tolerant of those different values. In dealing with conflict, the most important and consistent element is open, honest and clear communication. Few people regard themselves as poor communicators, it is the bounden duty of management, particularly those that require their employees, how they communicate feedback, and how, in the case of conflict can improve. Important that the staff can be assured of recrimination, to say the truth, no two people are exactly the same freedom. Therefore, the personality conflicts in the workplace is inevitable. An employee may have a r eserved personality, while another may be more outgoing and forward-looking. Problems, the two do not understand or do not respect each others inherent nature. For example, employees may feel more outgoing personality is more introverted workers contempt, if not more with him. He might think it is a very small, not only is the personality of the staff. In addition, his practice handling the project may be analytical, and she is intuitive. Conflict when the two do not understand, and respect each other, bigger, more complex distributed organizations, the heavier the parties to communicate effectively, it is difficult to achieve exactly the right person. Addition, the working group loyalty can be a powerful, territory, another group often browse hostile invasion. lot of time and energy is wasted in the address this is not a normal conflicts. competition for limited resources is also a factor in conflict. typical example here is usually normal budget requirements exceed the available f unds which may be the most common source of conflict and the most familiar in all tissues When you create expectations and did not realize, may lead to a lot of negative did not honor the commitment to the customer, voluntary overtime, less than expected wage growth and the allocation of resources to different departments do not have to explain a great deal of These are some simple examples, leading to a conflict between the customer and the company, the employees and management personnel and departments. When the personal or political parties into a process of negotiations to resolve the conflict, their table in a certain direction, in their efforts to resolve the conflict. The most basic in both directions to enter into negotiations, insist on cooperation or competition. Cooperation with the interest-based negotiations process, which leads to the parties to seek a win-win solution. The controversial cooperation between the parties to a negotiated settlement is more likely to develop relations of trust and mutually beneficial solution options. Mutual benefit and win-win approach is considered to be a constructive process. Win/win approach is to change the conflict from adversarial attack and defense, cooperation. It is a powerful change in attitude, change the entire communication process. A person will always be a common solution to the problem, can make the difference. Your readers may be man redirect conflict. First of all, you have to convince yourself. Creative solutions are ef fectively snuffed out. The losing individual or group may reject the leaders. They have the powerful long-lasting negative emotional reactions. The approached to the conflict is collaboration. Its mean mutual solve problem. The participants must have skills for communicating and working in groups effectively. The participants also must have attitudes that support a climate of trust to work through problems. The participants have to use effective problem-solving strategies. This will help them to solve conflict easily In conclusion, I want to repeat that not all conflicts can be resolved. Sometimes, trying to solve this case, will make things worse. The initial information collected and the conclusions to for whatever reason, this relationship is to save, then it may be the best possible recognition, and do whatever you can separate the two sides. I also know more about the primary source of the conflict began. I give some example on primary source. Moreover, I learn about extra knowledge about more about conflict and how to solve a conflict.

What is the effect on the audience of John Proctors decision in act 4? :: English Literature
What is the effect on the audience of John Proctors decision in act 4? How does miller build up tension and drama in this section? How is it still relevant to a modern audience? This essay is on the main importance of John Proctors decision and how Miller builds up a sense of tension (and also drama) throughout Act 4. I will also mention how relevant the play is in modern day times by discussing McCarthyism. Firstly, John Proctors decision in this section is quite simple, sign the agreement or not. But it is the way that this section influences the audience that is significant, because it gets the audience more involved. John has several problems with signing the agreement, for example in signing the agreement he signs his name away, in other words he will lose his reputation. We can learn that Proctor values his name, and sees it as the only thing he has left, apart from Elizabeth; ââ¬Å"I have given you my soul, leave me my name!â⬠This shows us, the audience which Proctor although is shown as a stern man through out the play, in this part he is shown as being emotional and considers his name as a symbol of self respect. Following on from the previous point, humiliation is used well to make us feel sorry for Proctor due to the fact that he is faced with his name and confession being pinned to the church door, the example of this is, when Proctor exclaims; ââ¬Å"God does not need my name nailed to the church doorâ⬠This helps us strengthen our beliefs that Proctor values his name. Proctor also has other reasons to struggle with his decision, mainly because the others involved are what we know as saints; Rebecca and Martha are very holy people, who believe that they should never lie, even though the consequences may be as extravagant as death, the two saints are holding out against the interrogation of Danforth, therefore John takes it into account that although he is not as holy as they are, to keep the faith, he must hold out, but, the audience gets a shock when John considers the agreement, this gives us an element of surprise and a will he wont he effect, making us watch even more avildly. Other influential things that help John make the decision, is the fact he has a family, he has two boys who he does ask questions about, not only does he ask about his two boys, but also he asks about his unborn child and his wife Elizabeth, who he cares for dearly; an example of

Identity Changes in The Count of Monte Cristo :: The Count of Monte Cristo
Identity Changes in The Count of Monte Cristo The Count of Monte Cristo is a very sourceful book with characters creating different and new identities. Fernand changes to Count de Morcerf during the time of Dantes' imprisonment, Mercedes changes to Countess de Morcerf after her marriage to Fernand, Cadderouse changes to M. Pilletin, Benedetto changes to Andrea Cavalcanti to disguise and murders Cadderouse, and last but certaintly not least Edmund Dantes with the various identity changes. Even though these characters names are just being changed or in Dantes' case, changing their names, this still means creating various identities. In every identity change, there is a different name or "alias" as some people call it, and with every name comes a different identity. Dantes had to create a different personality to go with each new character to keep himself disguised. Just like anyone else who may be popular, people feel the need to change their identities for many different reasons, some more commonly used than others. People who ch ange their identities may feel the need to change their identity, because it lets you be someone different, it's unique, it defines who you really are or who you want to be, it allows you to hide or get away from yourself and others, and many other reasons. For these reasons or at least some of them, I feel that Dantes, the main character of this book creates a new identity so many times. The main reason I believe that he changed his identity so many times was to hide himself Edmund Dantes from the people he confronted. As I stated before, Edmund Dantes created these different identities to hide from the other characters that he confronted in the book. He confronted many people whom he had confronted in the past. Appearing as Dantes would have probably caused more conflict between him and those characters. For example: I believe the first identity change came after he escaped from prison and found the treasure. Dantes had disguised himself into the priest Abbe Busconi. He had an encounter with Fernand earlier in the book (p. 88-89) and did not want him to recognize that he was Edmund Dantes, the man who was once engaged to Mercedes. Therefore, I feel that he was hiding himself from Fernand as disguising himself as a priest at this time and could have believed that Fernand would confess to him about being involved with the conspiracy of getting Dantes locked up. Christof Koch and the Theory of Consciousness Essay -- Consciousness
Consciousness was first described and introduced by Sigmund Freud and Friedrich Nietzsche (Crick & Koch, 2001). It has been described as a realm of the mind that controls human behaviour. However consciousness is not accessible to conscious introspection, self-examination or a source of knowledge. On the contrary, Christof Koch, a neuroscientist collaborator of Francis Crick, describes unconsciousness as any neuronal activity that does not give rise to conscious sensation, thought or memory (Crick & Koch, 2001). Though unconsciousness differs in many different ways to consciousness, it works in a waking state that deals with cause and effect and the logical spontaneous processes in order to process information. On the contrary unconscious mind is associated with involuntary activities that form connections with thoughts, ideas and reflections, which unconsciousness also has the capability for multi-tasking. Therefore, as Koch explains, unconscious puts humans is an ââ¬Å"onlineâ⬠mode, allowing us to override our instinctual ââ¬Ëofflineââ¬â¢ programming. Scientists and philosophers have different understanding and explanations for consciousness, as it used to be observed from a philosophical point of view only. However, the advancement of technologies in understanding brain from a computational, bio-molecular and cognitive and behavioural approach, consciousness is being studied from a neuroscientific approach as well. Therefore neuroscientists have difficulties in verifying and understanding its existence, for example, Dennet believes consciousness is the evolved capacity for self-knowledge that gives us the subjective experience. Bel Canto Essay
Bel Canto ââ¬â Essay Love in a pressure cooker is much different then love in ââ¬Å"realâ⬠life or in the mundane world. The pressure cooker in Bel Canto would be the situation of being held hostage, held inside by terrorists. Not being able to live the lives that they all once lived. In the mundane world people are busy. They are busy taking children here and there; people have schedules to attend to and places to be. The ability to do what they want is limited. Many parts of the ââ¬Å"realâ⬠world are dictated by agendas. People lose the ability to love naturally. They learn to love something or someone because they are around it all the time or itââ¬â¢s what they are told to love. Many of times people forgo doing things they love because they donââ¬â¢t have time or donââ¬â¢t make time to do what they love. When Kato played piano for the first time it was like a hearing all their feelings come alive. Kato didnââ¬â¢t tell anyone that he played piano he just decided to play. Simon and Edith also found there love again, there love for each other. Because death and danger were possible many of the characters wanted to have friendships while in the hostage situation. Many of them faced language barriers but over came them so that they had what they wanted in dire times. The characters also live for the moment. They act in ways that they wouldnââ¬â¢t in any other situation because the unknown thought of death is lingering. When Hosokawa started to realize that he loved Roxanne it was not known if they would ever really be together. Hosokawa was willing to give up his life in Japan to be with Roxanne, because he realized in this situation that he was not doing what he loved and did not love the life he was living. Love in a pressure cooker situation makes people be more spontaneous and do the things they have forgotten about or want to do rather then what they have to do. Love in the real world is different. Itââ¬â¢s harder to get to know someone sometime, or be able to be with someone because society says it shouldnââ¬â¢t be allowed. Real world love is harder and more difficult to keep at times. But in the end, Love is still Love and it is something that is felt by all, whether you are in a pressure cooker situation or in the real world. The desire to be loved by someone is always there and the desire to love someone is always there too.

Would I Answer Honestly If I Was Participating in a National Crime Survey?
Would I answer honestly if I was participating in a national crime survey? Christina M Blanks Criminology CCJ 1017-12 Instructor Cedric Thomas Would you answer honestly if participating in a national crime survey asking about your criminal behavior, including drinking and drugs use? Why or why not? Yes I would answer honestly. The reason I would answer honestly is because it would help in the data, profiles, and to make sure that the results are correct, so there will not be any confusion in the data when criminologist go to profile criminals. Explain how honesty and dishonesty impact self report studies. If false information is given on a survey then the data is not accurate, and when criminologist go to use the data to profile a criminal it will not be correct. When true information is given on a survey, data will be entered correctly, and when time to profile a criminal it will be accurate and more affective. As long as you are honest on a survey or anything else, the results come out correct and can change data so that criminologist can create better profiles when profiling criminals. Also to better help criminologist figure out why a person committed the crime, what lead the person to commit a crime, and how they may be able to stop people from committing crimes. Self-report study is a method for measuring crime involving the distribution of a detailed questionnaire to a sample of people, asking them whether they have committed a crime in a particular period of time. Self-report study has been a good method for criminologists to determine the social characteristics of ââ¬Ëoffendersââ¬â¢. Self report studies involve confidential questionnaires that invite the respondents to record voluntarily whether or not they have committed any of the listed offences. Negative affectivity: how serious a threat to self-report studies of psychological distress? Brennan RT, Barnett RC. Harvard Graduate School of Education, Department of Administration, Planning and Social Policy, Cambridge, MA 02138, USA. Womenââ¬â¢s Health. 1998 Winter; 4(4):369-83. Serious questions have been raised about the common practice of relying on self-report measures to assess the relation between subjective role experiences on the one hand and both mental and physical health symptoms on the other. Such self-report measures may reflect a common underlying dimension of negative affectivity (NA), thereby leading to spurious results. In this article, we present findings from analyses in which we estimate, using a hierarchical linear model, the relation between subjective experiences in job and marital roles and self-reports of symptoms of psychological distress after controlling for NA in a sample of 300 full-time employed men and women in married couples. Results demonstrate (a) that NA can account for a great deal of the variation in self-reported psychological distress, as much as half in the case of the men in the sample; (b) that estimates of the relations between a self-reported predictor of social-role quality (e. . , marital-role quality, job-role quality) may be biased by failure to include NA as a predictor of self-reported psychological distress; (c) that the degree of bias in these estimates is dependent on the nature of the predictor, and (d) that the role of NA as a confounder does not appear to be dependent on gender. ââ¬â ncbi. nlm. nih. gov Male and female differences in self-report cheating James A Athanasou, University of Technology, Sydney Olabisi Olasehinde, University of Ilorin ââ¬â Nigeria Cheating is an important area for educational research, not only because it reduces the consequential validity of assessment results, but also because it is anathema to widely held public principles of equity and truthfulness (see Cizek, 1999 for a comprehensive review of the topic). Moreover, modern education is centered on numerous situations that really depend upon a studentââ¬â¢s honesty.
